AMERICAN BANNER LINES, 1957-1960. American Banner Lines was the last steamship venture of Arnold Bernstein,* who created this line in 1957 to provide inexpensive but comfortable passage to Europe for middle-class tourists. He bought a Mariner* freighter, which he extensively refitted to carry up to 900 passengers, only 40 in first class and the rest in tourist class. The refurbished ship, the Atlantic, whose cabins all had their own showers and toilets for greater privacy, was entirely air-conditioned for the comfort of the passengers.

Since 1919 Robert Dollar* and his sons had begun buying shares quietly through dummy firms, until by 1921 the Dollars owned more stock than Alexander himself in the Admiral Line, although the family still did not have a controlling interest. * Alexander took very bitterly the loss of his transpacific service and chafed at being under the vigilance of the Dollars, but with no other alternative left, he remained president of the Admiral Line and was still far from powerless. , in 1922: first, that of the Northern Pacific and, even more spectacularly, that of the Great Northern* which he rather immodestly renamed the H.
