The nature of the new particles created by the exsolution of alumina from alumina rich mullites is also related to the process. 2 wt % of alumina)’ . 6 wt% ), finely twinned with a lamellar microstructure. Exsolution of A1203 from the alumina rich mullite matrix produced a-AI203 rectangular precipitates of a few microns in size and uniformly inclined to the mullite lamellae directions. For alumina content above 83 wt%, a-AlaO3 precipitated as a primary phase in the form of dendrites or spherulites.

2 Influence of composition (fibre and precursor content) and kneading time to fibre shortening, starting length 6 mm 21 Examination of the tablets pressed from the granules by non destructive ultrasonic and x-ray (microfocus) methods showed no failure or inhomogenities, Fig. 3. It should be kept in mind that only ‘large’ defects in the sub-mm range are visualised by these methods. The failure resolution can be estimated from artificially introduced failures as a paperclip and a pinhole. Fig. 2 mm; paper clip) temperature profil, T1 ~~~ ~~ .

Dissolution of mullite during heat treatment and high tem erature loading has been described in mullite samples doped with alkali33 This dissolution is coupled with the transport of matter through a liquid phase and mullite reprecipitation on other interfaces. Elongated alumina growth and mullite dissolution, described for single phase systems, occur simultaneously in the mullite/alumina system studied. The higher rate of microstructural modification observed, compared to the single phase materials, shows a synergistic relationship with this two phase nanostructure.
